TWO Government ministers have confirmed that security agencies are investigating alleged threats made against Minister of Defence Wayne Sturge.

Cabinet is expected to meet on the issue, they said.

Justice Minister Devesh Maharaj and Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander said the matter is being treated as serious but details cannot be disclosed while investigations continue.

They were speaking to reporters during their visit to the Besson Street Police Station yesterday.

Maharaj said Cabinet members were united in concern.

Well, we are very concerned. All of us are very concerned. These are our colleagues and a minister, but there is only so much we can say at this point in time, and I trust that you would understand that the matter is under investigation and that we are taking it all very seriously, he said.

He added that the issue will be addressed at the Cabinet level.

They are due to meet on it. But yes, there is a very grave concern. We are very concerned about this situation and certainly our colleague, and it seems that the intelligence reports, from what we read in the papers, show that it was a very real threat, Maharaj said.

Alexander said security protocols were activated once the report was made.

Mr Sturge would have consulted with the relevant agencies and once the threat comes forward, or information that a threat is involved, what normally happens is that you would also brief your family, so I know that was done, he said.
