MLS Launches New NFT Platform, MLS Quest

- The platform will allow users to claim digital medallions that will unlock exclusive experiences

The Major League Soccer (MLS) has launched a new NFT platform to help the league’s fans collect digital medallions that unlock exclusive experiences. These experiences include meet-and-greet opportunities and VIP club access, with soccer fans embarking on quests to search for medallions in virtual and physical places scattered across North America. The medallions also give MLS Quest users access to branded team merchandise, and game tickets, among other benefits, a move that will help cement the relationship between the teams, players, and fans.
Medallions Reveal a Key Play of the Game
The league’s fans participate by visiting designated MLS Quest online and physical pick-up zones. These zones hold medallions that “reveal a Key Play of the Game.” The key play can be from present or past matches.
According to the MLS Quest website , users can collect key plays by “staying connected with [their] favorite team” both online and “on the go.” Key play collectors can trade the key plays they don’t need to fuel their other quests.
MLS SVP of Emerging Ventures, Chris Schlosser, said that the move is meant to enhance the fan experience while expanding the fan base. He added that the NFT platform is part of the league’s commitment to explore cutting-edge innovation.
MLS created the NFT platform in partnership with digital collectible platform Sweet. Sweet CEO Tom Mizzone commented on the development saying that MLS Quest turns “collecting into a quest that challenges each fan’s knowledge of the sport.”
MLS Isn’t Exploring the Web3 Alone
MLS isn’t the only soccer outfit that is exploring the blockchain world. The Argentine Football Association , for example, has in the past announced a deal with metaverse platform Upland to to engage its fans in a virtual environment.
Individual football/soccer players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Kevin-Prince Boateng have mounted individual explorations of the web3 world.
With MLS announcing its entry into the web3 space, it’s to be seen whether the league’s fans will join it in the virtual world.
